Dr. Dieter Dettke has served as Executive Director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Washington, DC since 1985. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the Freie Universität Berlin and also studied law and political science at the Universities of Strasbourg (France), Bonn, and Berlin from 1962-1969.
Prior to joining the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Dr. Dettke served as political counselor of the SPD Parliamentary Group of the German Bundestag and served as Staff Director at the Office of the State Minister of the German Foreign Ministry. From 1969 to 1974 he was a research associate at the German Society for Foreign Affairs in Bonn. Dr. Dettke is a foreign and security policy specialist and has published widely on these issues. His publications include Allianz im Wandel (Frankfurt, 1976) and various articles and papers on security issues, East-West relations and U.S. foreign and domestic policy.
